Weak weeks for games
Oh dear. The last few weeks for the games industry have been, well, horrid.
It all started on a news light Sunday when Manchester Cathedral officials accused Sony of using the church in the PS3 shooter, Resistance: Fall of Man, without their express permission (which they say wouldn't have been given).
Sony have since apologised but have kept quiet on whether the game will be pulled.
Then, as you probably read in the papers, Manhunt 2 was rejected for a rating by the BBFC, effectively banning the game from being sold in the UK, earning the accolade of being the first game to be banned here in 10 years (Carmageddon being the last in 1997, which was allowed after an appeal). This was swiftly followed by an Adults Only rating in the US, meaning that most stores will not stock the game. The developers are now wondering how they're going to get out of the hole they just dug. The sales of this game will be pitiful if countries keep banning the game from sale or keeping it out of stockists. Have they courted controversy too much?
Just to make things even worse, on the same day, it was found that another game was pulled from the shelves. Law and Order: Double or Nothing was pulled after it was found that the game contained a CCTV image of James Bulger being taken away by his killers in Liverpool back in 1993. I can understand this decision. I have just one question though. This game was released in 2003.
Why hasn't anyone noticed it until now?!

Last week (11th to 17th June)
Strange time shifting this week. I didn't have a clue what day it was and ended up late on a couple of stories so apologies for that.
"FORE!" is the cry, but I was looking at Everybody's Golf 5 on the PS3. This game seems easy but trust me, you'll be addicted if you have even a small appreciation of golf. This week's releases were brought to you by the number four and LittleBigBlanet came under the microscope.

Watch List: Little Big Planet
Every Friday, I look at one of the games on the Watch List, the list of games that you should be keeping your eye on for news and reviews.
Name: LittleBigPlanet
Format: Playstation 3

What is it?
This is the most interesting game in the Playstation 3's line-up. Basically, you create your characters and run around solving puzzles in a level. The catch? The levels can be your creation, or someone else's! The graphics look like they come out of a cloth shop and there is some amazing interaction being shown in the levels and demonstrations given so far. This is certainly one to look out for as some have touted this as the best thing on the PS3. No planned release date yet though a demo was announced for sometime this year.

What is it?

Last Week (4th June to 10th June)
Slowly getting back to normal. No more long trips planned for the next couple of months so a chance to relax and get back to some sort of semblance of normality.
That normality was disturbed slightly though when I looked at GamesCampus' website and found 2 new games there in testing. I liked the look of Manga Fighter, but wasn't too worried about Fishing Champ (since then though, I've been more tempted, thanks to my form in liking fishing mini-games in Okami and Dark Chronicle).
I took a more in depth look at Jeanne D'Arc as well, being on the wanted list. Quite a number of releases this week, unusual for the summer. Finally, I took a quick look at Dragon Quest IX from the watch list. A main game from a big franchise on a handheld? What's the world coming to?

Yes, you read that right. A main game in one of the biggest selling franchises in Japan heads to the Nintendo DS! This news created a few shockwaves around the blogosphere and did initially alienate a few gamers in Japan. However, this game is highly anticipated and the cel shaded graphics look good. Also, this is another collaboration between Square-Enix and Level 5, the second after the critically acclaimed Dragon Quest VIII. The game is action based but quite how Japan will react is open to debate as they tend to prefer their turn based affairs. Here's a trailer to tease:

A strategy RPG loosely based on the story of Joan of Arc (otherwise known as Jeanne D'Arc) and her struggles against the English occupation of France
Why is it on the list?
The PSP had been getting a lot of flak for just having ports of games but this is one of the many unique games for the Playstation Portable that are around. The graphics look good and despite it's distance from reality (dragons?!) the game is certainly interesting. The nice anime style graphics will appeal to Disgaea fans while they wait eagerly for the PSP version to come out. This game is already out in Japan but is getting some good press in the US.
Despite the European ties, this game doesn't look likely to come into Europe. If the situation changes, well all the better.

Fighting, Manga style!
A huge majority of people reading this may not have heard of Shot-Online (a free to play Massively Multiplayer Online Role Playing Game or MMORPG), but I used to be an avid player of the game. At the time, to me, it was the best (swingometer) golf game outside of Everybody's Golf. In the end, interest waned as well as the growing number of problems the company experienced with the game itself started to mount. *
This hasn't stopped SO makers GamesCampus from moving on to other games. They started up Xiah which I couldn't get to work well graphically and duly lost interest. Since the last time I visited, they have announced 2 more games. One of these is Fishing Champ, where you catch and breed fish. The game is still in development though and probably not worth too much hassle.
On the other hand, Manga Fighter is a different kettle of fish (sorry) altogether. It's basically a 3rd person shooter. You go round shooting people. With Manga characters.
Personally, it looks crazy, but I'm actually thinking this might be a good game. They have a trailer up and the game is in closed beta at the moment but it looks good, if not complex (but then again, I love simple games). Keep an eye out on it. Could be a different take on the genre.
* I still have the game installed though. My name is HiddenAway in the game so if you play it and want a match, just e-mail me (address on the right) and I'll try to find some time to come online.

What is it?
Good question. Square-Enix definately wanted something different this time! Well first of all, the big non-news of the day. It's an RPG. Now, the story goes that you play a 15 year old kid who loves music and graffiti who suddenly finds himself in Shibuya (a fashion and hip-hop centre in Japan in real-life). His existence is on the line and the only way to save himself is to survive 7 days in the area, while playing games set by grim reapers.
In game Shibuya is modelled to the real life Shibuya, with name changes for copyright issues. Combat promises to be fast paced and unlike Square-Enix with their usual turn based affairs.
The game does look strange but I'm willing to give it a chance, if only to show all the doubters of Square-Enix to see what they can do.
This is released in Japan on 27th July 2007. Here's a trailer for you to look at. It's better than explaining right?
